410,s doin my head in

Post by timmo » Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:04 pm

Hello all. Hopefully someone out there knows the answer to this one! It was a non runner when I bought it after ages (new petrol getting spark back) it finally ran after I reset the cam belt as it appeared to have jumped a few teeth. It ran okay for a while but missed a bit which gradually got worse and worse. Checked timing etc and marks are where they should be according to haynes. Took it offroading missing badly it ran all day but severely lacked power. no.3 cylinder wasn,t firing at all despite good spark 1,2 ran well and 4 ran rich now I can't get it to run at all not even fire. Starter seems to have thrown its toys out of the pram now and will only turn over slowly with a wining noise. engine doesn,t smoke and has standard carb. I'm now thinking head gasket(no emulsion or water in oil) or valve trouble what do you think? I'm thinking it might be quicker to replace engine! Does anyone have one? compression test? HELP!

welcome to the forum matey, feel free to introduce yourself and post a few pics of your zuki in the new members section

Can you turn the engine over by hand with a ratchet on the crank? If you do so with the rocker cover off are all the valves opening and closing properly?

Could be a valve or two sticking? leaking inlet manifold maybe?

Did you replace the timing belt and tensioner? if not has it jumped a few teeth on the timing belt again?

Yeah turns over fine on ratchet all valves seem to work as they should and I've got cam cover off to make sure nothings gone astray and all lines up only thing I notice when turning over by hand is a wheezing noise from the valve area on compression best way i can describe it really. Must say I'm impressed with the speedy response! I'm a member of another forum (not suzuki related!) and have never had a reply as fast as this!

Well there's a few good signs, the wheeezing sound could just be another cylinder decompressing.

or

I would do a compression test and I've got a feeling you might find number 3 down on compression from what you have described. perhaps the valve seat is damaged or even the valve itself meaning that it is not sealing properly.

I think compression test has to be next option as then i'll know for sure but I should still get signs of life from other cylinders when starting but I get not a dicky bird . From other posts it seems the carb can be trouble and I will be getting an su when I find one. By the way will an sj413 engine bolt straight on the 410,s bellhousing as these engines seem more common?

It's only really the 1.3 and 1.6 carbs that give trouble, the 410 carbs are generally pretty reliable and rarely go wrong; they only suffer from blocked jets every now and again really.

Might be worth checking the simple things like fuel filter and carb jets though? this can be done in situ.

remove the plate to the right of the fuel input/float assembly and also remove the float assembly (3 screws

pop the pin out and remove float

remove needle and clean but don't loose any of the bits ;) and give the fuel inlet a good blow through.

remove bolt, drain carb and remove lower jet, give it a good blow through.

remove the upper jet, you might need a bit of wire to get it out, and give that a blow through

There is another jet under that screw in the pic just below the upper jet, but I never usually bother with this one as it can be hard to remove without damaging it and have never had any problems with it blocking, I would only remove it for a clean as a last resort!
give all the chambers a good clean and put it all back together in the reverse order

Thanks for the great pics! Cleaned out carb but still ne change. Starter is kanckered solenoid gets hot when operated for a short time but still no firing. Havent got a compression tester but i been offered a 413 engine with gearbox which i might go for. Is it a straight swap does anyone know what extra bits and pieces i may need?
