4x4 newb

Post by maisey » Fri Jan 07, 2011 2:51 pm

been a member since christmas and owned my little zooki for about three weeks. coverd just under four hundred miles in it and can say they have been the most entertaining with avoiding the dual carriageways as much as possible as they are boring as it is when your doing 70mph ;) so fifthty takes the biscuit. Lovely car juat to take a moment and smell the roses, but in my case sometimes theres a burning plastic smell have put this down to a crank shaft oil seal. Like peeps advice on some slight mods for her would like to keep as much of it looking as standard. To my surprise or as far as the eye can tell there is no rot no any of the arches. Was a bit concered about the throttle pedal that was hanging on by a thread, the original metal around the stud had rotted away so quick repair for now with reapir washes m10 and nut.

had the choice between swb or lwb would have to be lwb, although with one seat removed in the rear got enough room for tool box. On start up it idles quite high, mean high like 2 thou with bit of smoke but been told at college this is normall for the weather. mpg is quite poor full tank gets me like hundred and forty miles :argh: but got to replace the original fuel filter  so that might help. was looking at vitara conversion.

Nice tidy zook you've got there... Should be OK off road with those A/Ts on it...

Although, First mods I would consider it a set of mud terrain tyres....

I would recommend either the Insa Turbo Saharas (my old tyres)

Image

or Kumho KL-71s (currently tyres)

Image

both are well behaved on and off road...

After that I would maybe look at 2" lift and some wheel spacers... I find that to be a perfect initial setup...
will give decent amount of ground clearance, and increased stability

Avoid extended shackles like the plague. The best value way to lift 2" is add-a-leaf...
Should cost roughly £100 to lift
Wheel spacers tend to go on ebay for around £50
Sets of tyres vary on type and condition
I got my current set of 5 for £170
I got the last set of 4 for £90!!!

Also, I would initially put the high idle speed on start down to the carburettor...

The auto choke mechanisms tend to jam or stop working properly

I fitted an SU carb and modded inlet manifold on mine, best engine mod I've done...
I'd say get an SU, then get a 1.6 engine, not the other way around

Nice and tidy Sammy you got there! the auto chokes on those carbs do play up a bit but you should be able to drop the choke idle speed down, I cant remember what screw it is on the carb though.

its spi not carb, there is a idle sensor on the side with some 8mm bolts holding it on, with these lose there is movement for the sensor guess its a case of trail and error without a gas analyser.

Oh yer my bad didn't realize it was a late model Sammy. not sure if the spi ones had it but on the carbed models there is an idle up to compensate for extra power drain when you turn on the lights and heaters etc. These sometimes play up so that could be part of your problem? If it has one of course? If so just dissconnect it as its not really needed.

Hello and welcome. nice looking zook :smokin:

You seem to be after the look that i went for.... Subtle mods, some oversized tires ect :)

If you just wanted tires, splash out on some decent tread ones, you can have the best tricked up truck in the world but the tires always make it.

My choice was a mt that went well on road
