As mentioned above.

If the gearing is out it will be very sluggish and down on power even on small gradients.

Knackered bearings will grumble and you can usually feel some up and down movement if you put a bar under the wheel and wiggle it up and down.

Did you fit new sliders or clean and grease the exisitng ones when you did the brakes?
Cleaned all the pistons tonight on all 4 corners, wheels spin freely now with one hand and very little resistance. drove it round the field and in and out the shed a few times and it is a Lot better but still seems to be sticking / struggling as before but not as bad.
Everything cleaned and greased when fitted new pads. Cant hear anything from bearings and there is no movement on the wheels either direction with bar.
Tyres are 31s
How can I tell if gearing is out ? as far as I know it has the original transfer box fitted. but then again I wouldn't know even looking at it.
Thanks everyone so far far help and advice.

Chance are its standard gearing. Without pulling diffs and transfer boxes out to count the revolutions you won’t know.

There is some handy info here to help work out how far out the gearing going from standard tyres to bigger tyres.

As jordi says, you need to count your teeth on the crown wheel when you pull the diffs. A 410 transfer box will help as will sj diffs which are 3.9
What engine is it? The sj in that picture is a sj413samurai not an sj410. Is there a handbrake drum on the transfer box?
Smaller tyres will help but will look stupid.

Samurais didnt come with that handbrake setup so its definitely been changed. All 4 wheels off the ground, put in 4wd low, mark the prop from gearbox to transfer box and turn the drum 1 revolution. The small prop will turn either 2.25 turns or 2.5 turns. 2.5 is 410 and better for the ratios.
Its definitely not a 410, i also very much doubt someone fit a 1.0. Standard they were 1.3 which is also identical to a 1.6 8v carb
If yours is sluggish then hope for 2.25 turns and 1300cc stamped on the bell housing, that way you now know what to do to improve it

Actually, scrap that. It looks like yours is an sj just with a samurai front end!
It could well be a 1.0 and have samurai axles and still have the samurai gearing which will make it awful. You would need 5.1 diffs from a mk1 vitara front and change your ring and pinions to get it back to near standard gearing, or change your engine...... And diffs.........
Measure your axle, should be 52.5" for samurai and 48.5" for sj. Looks like samurai to me though

Its an sj, bit hard to see but from them pics the axles look like sj axles. Which means you should have 3.9 or 4.1? diffs. Both better than the samurais 3.7.
Samurais are sj's too but have wider axles and a different front end and where the leaf springs mount arent under the chassis like yours are.

If you takr your front wheels off, measure from face of hub to face of hub it will be either 52.5 or 48.5, that will tell you if you have sj or sammy axles.

Both sj413 and samurai axles diffs are interchangeable and also accept vitara front diffs. Sj410 are different.

For 31" tyres you need a healthy engine, 410 transfer box and 3.9 diffs to be back at standard gearing (thats on a 1.3, a 1.6 should be ok with 3.7 diffs and a 410 transfer)

Thanks again, so when I measure is it from this face circled in red, or further forward ? Cheers
