Samurai with noisy 410 transfer box

Post by d_r_1989 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 12:37 pm

Im looking for abit of help with samurai, did about 140mile this weekend out green laning and now i have a really bad noise from what i think is the transfer box, its not a high pitched whine but more of a rough bearing rumble that gets louder as i accelerate, much quieter when rolling in gear. Becomes unbearable at about 50ish upwards
Theres now a significant leak from the front output seal.
Im going to try take it apart next week to investigate, is it possible its just a bearing thats faulty or will it be the gears them selves? I was thinking i could do a rocklobster whilst im there.
Any advice greatly appreciated

Just a thought as its really noisy around 50mph have you checked UJ's. Vibration from the ones of these usual gets worse at that speed just a thought

Thats a good point and i will check them. There was no vibrations, just an awful rough bearing noise
It makes the noise at all speeds and gradually gets worse with speed. From around 50mph upwards its loud.

Check all UJ bolts are tight. Even if they are whip off the props and check every UJ. Check transfer box mounts...are those bolts tight too?
If it ticks over...leave it

Turns out the mount bolts were loose! Its still noisy but not as bad. Think ill have a go at a rock lobster and give it a freshen up at the same time.
