Mate cant sign up? email activation error

my mate who's just bought the biggest bargain of a jimny going wants to sign up but cant due to this email activation error?
we've filled out all the info and the catchpa but when we go to hit register it says this (photo below) any ideas? same thing happens with different emails and different pc's but each time we have to change the username because it says the username is taken? ideal username would have been TyZuk.
seems like its an error that the site has had for a couple of weeks as you can see from the recent joined members (pic below)

I manually activated the account for now
