DIFF icult problems
Hi all. I'm having a nightmare with my rear diff. I posted on here a couple of months back and got some useful advice but I've still not been able to sort it.
So first thing first. Driving along and my diff manages to destroy its self. Lots of the teeth snap off of the crown wheel looks like it had damaged its self against the pinion (assume the bearing had gone that's why this happend)
So after ALOT of messing around trying to get a new one I finally managed to get myself a replacement rear diff with a diff lock already in there.
Fitted it, went to drive off and it makes to same noise as when it broke the first time.
Haven't opened it back up yet but have got a feeling the teeth will be damaged again. In fuming
Getting ready to sell the sj at this rate.
Anyone any ideas why it's done it

What kind of locker is it. You sure its not the locker making the noise?
If it was all good and free when fitted I can't see how it could sieze as you pull away for the first time?

It's a lockright locker. It's not the locker clicking that I can here it's a really loud noise. Almost like there is a spanner in the works if that makes sense. If got I feeling the noise was the teeth on the crown wheel snapping again. If there anything that could be causing this?
Re: DIFF icult problems
Has one of your wheel bearings seized solid and is causing the lockright to click?

Re: DIFF icult problems
Are you in 4wd? If so is it the same ratio as the front?
What was the condition of the replacement like? Backlash? pinion movement? Good bearings?
Have you jacked up both wheels and turned the rear prop by hand? If not try that and see what it feels like.

Re: DIFF icult problems
Hard to believe that two diffs can self destruct, how much history do you have on vehicle?
My locrite in rear can be noisy as hell for day or two then go quiet again for weeks. To beat diffs out sounds like a mismatch of diffs, but that would require you to be in 4wd. Could be worth dropping off front prop and see what happens. Also transfer box selectors could be jammed in 4wd but stick telling you different. Are you running spoa?

It's defo not in 4wd because when I had it up on axle stands I tested it and it didn't turn the front wheels.
Yes it's had a spoa convertion, haven't got much history but had been working fine for months

Re: DIFF icult problems
Seeing as it has a SPOA, could you have a knackered UJ in your rear prop and due to the angle it is subjected too, it may be putting too much strain on the diff bearing.
Ps I know nothing about this stuff so could be talking a load of bollocks.

Re: DIFF icult problems
These diffs can take a good beating. A bad UJ wouldnt be able to cause that much strain although may cause premature wear over a long time.
How have you go on with this? Did you try jack it up and turn by hand to see what it feels like like I said?
There's not much that could cause an instant failure like you described.
