Re: Dan's Suzuki Samurai build - Slowly starting stage 3
This has needed updating for quite a while so here goes.
Finished building up the 5.125 ratio ring and pinions onto a SJ case and into a steel SJ carrier.
Made a spacer from the old Vitara case so the diff case would sit centrally again.
Found an interesting way of checking the pinion preload with weighed bottles of water hanging from the flange in a carrier bag.
Ready to play
Once that was built up for the front to match the ARB I had for the rear I got myself a high output compressor and mounted that right up under the top of the dash out of harms way. The plate its fitted to is actually attached to the back side of the bonnet hinge bolts so couldn't be much higher.
Then moved on to the MOT prep which got worse with every turn and I ended up changing most bearings and seals on both axles and sorting both props while I had them apart to fit the diffs.
Fitted the rocklobster and x-eng at the same time but photos of that are pretty pointless as it looks much the same as any other setup.
Gearing on the road is rather low. I could have done with some ear defenders on the way to Wagtail really. On the redline in 5th at 70 mph with the cherry bomb, tyre noise, and wind noise is rather overwhelming.
Well worth it for the offroad gearing but in the future i may try pick up a 4.8 or 4.6 ratio Vit diff to try if it all gets a bit too much on the road.
The ARB is probably the best toy I've ever owned... apart from the truck as a whole obviously
The low ratio crawl is nice and slow and controlled and it will climb and decend quite a steep hills in a very controlled manner at tickover

I really need to know where those dials came from, I'm going to get some!
If it ticks over...leave it

One of them has stopped illuminating already after a good shake up at Wagtail.donkeychomp wrote:I really need to know where those dials came from, I'm going to get some!
Haven't had time to check for loose connections yet but they do look a little Chinese....
They were free so I cant really complain.

Loving it - I really really need to sort my diffs too. I want to learn more about diffs, how to build them up properly with the correct backspacing, preload etc...
1985 SJ413VX (SJ50V) with SPOA, rear disc brakes, 31x10.5R15 Kaiman Malatesta tyres, an MOT and a lot left to do!

Bump.
The two builds at the top of view active topics were Volvos.

Re: Dan's Suzuki Samurai build - Finally updated :)
Truck is still receiving constant use and maintainance.
Its currently sat up on axle stands as both diff's have been out and I've built the rear up with 4.3:1 ring and pinions from an auto Vitara and will do the same to the front one evening this week as I need it to make a rather long journey on Friday.
I finally had enough of the really low gearing and the gearbox has been getting a bit warm on long drives.
Its one of those things where its cool to say I've been there and done it but I really am looking forward to something closer to standard high range for road use and I still have the rocklobster when I need some low range.
On removal the rear ring gear was quite worn and there is actually a small part of one of the teeth of the pinion chipped off so good job I decided to change as it probably would have failed anyway.
It will still be a little lower than standard but should go nicely from the looks of ratio calculations.
For anyone that's interested (As I couldn't find the details myself before I started the swap) the 4.3:1s don't require a spacer behind the ring like 5.125s do to set the case back central in the carrier. Neither do they require the side gear pinion shafts to be held in with a can or tack welded like with 5.125s. Two of the tack welds had actually come away on my front as the case is cast and the weld had just sat on the surface anyway.
EDIT: Once actually built up I found the front needed the spacer the same as with the 5.125s so either theres some difference between the 2 sets of RnPs I used or something different with the cases/carriers I've got.
Will report back with how it improves road driving once they are both fitted this week.

Re: Dan's Suzuki Samurai build - Going backwards (sort of)
4.3s should be really nice on 33s it's the ratio I want....or 4.1s if I can get a set imported.

That zook really is very very neat indeed. A tad slow but who cares?
