Standard steering rod

Hi,

Does any one know the length of a standard 413 steering bar, I need to cut up my z bar and make a original one, I'd just prefer to check my measurmenof against some one else's before I start,

Are you running samurai axles ?

413 axles,

just dont fancy bying a new one , they seem a bit expensive

If you do this, make sure that it's both very strong, and doesn't look modified because I believe it's illegal to modify your steering components without taking an IVA test.

I could be wrong about that, though.
1985 SJ413VX (SJ50V) with SPOA, rear disc brakes, 31x10.5R15 Kaiman Malatesta tyres, an MOT and a lot left to do!

Don't know if it's to the ends or hole/ball-joint centres.
I could measure mine if it stopped bloody raining :cry:

Hi, sorry guys, I tried posting earlier but it kept popping up an error,

Cheers for looking for one,

I've made one for now, didn't know about the alteration issue, so I'll get a new one at some point before the mot, or maby with enough paint it will look original, can be sure the weldings better than a original. Lol

When I had the engine checked my dad said The mot guy was happy with the z bar, and that's obviously not right lol.

You can weld suspension components and they will pass an MOT just fine. There is a caveat to this though.

Short version: Just don't do a shit job and don't weld a leaf spring or torsion bar (obviously).

Wrong section as far as steering components are concerned

It's entirely up to the testers discretion but a lot will fail modified/welded steering components (i.e welded since the original manufacturing process)

reason for rejection

inappropriate structural modification or repair by welding to a steering linkage component, or signs of excessive heat having been applied

h.
deliberate modification which significantly reduces the original strength, excessive corrosion, severe distortion, a fracture or an inadequate repair of a load bearing member or its supporting structure or supporting panelling within 30cm of a steering component mounting, that is, within a ‘prescribed area’. See Appendix C.

Here's a prime example of something that should fail an MOT if the tester is doing his job properly

We can get the steering links here for about £60 for both bars... going to the parts man tomorrow so I will ask about them.
Not sure what the shipping would be like though
