Project back in black.

Post by robbie1985 » Fri Jan 23, 2015 6:43 pm

Well good evening,
I'm Robbie and am down in Portsmouth, and am a marine engineer.
Last night I picked up my first ever suzuki vitara. It's a 1999 jx 4u soft top, with a test till April and 94k on the clock. it's had the following work done:
15x8 compomotive wheels with 30" kumho tyres,
Bumper exit exhaust,
3" suspension lift with diff drop brackets.
And the following general bits,
Both front lower ball joints,
New rear shocks,
New fuel pump,
Gear box and diff oil changed,
New steering tie rods,
Rebuild front Manuel locking hubs(need help with these)

It was once blue but some one in the recent past has used a roller to paint the poor thing magnolia, which is gonna be one of the first things that I repair. The clip for the rear screen on the soft top has broken ton the drivers side and the has been letting in water for quite a while and the rear carpet had essentially turned in a marsh. There is some rust as you would expect but it's really not all that bad from what I've been able to see, it's going up on a ramp on Monday so I'll probably find more.
The motor pulls well and ticks over nicely although it idles at 2000 rpm when cold.

Thank in advance for any help, hopefully I can be just as helpful

I'll get some pics up in a mo.

Yeah you guys have already helped me buy it so now it's all about making it as best as it can be. It's been a while since I've had a project car so am looking forward to it.
Talking of help, any ideas on the high rpm idle when cold?? What's the norm for them??
Any good sites for parts that are reasonably priced??

Anton

They all idle high when cold. Mine runs at about 1500 to 2000 when it is really freezing. How high is yours?

Yeah it's about the same, idles up at 2000 then drops to 1500 and then down to 800/1000 once it's up to temp. If it's the same as yours then I won't worry about it. I've just not had a car that idles like that. I love it already Anton, am just gagging to get it sorted and looking better I have some ideas for a front bumper too.
Any idea how I can improve the soft top. It's my first soft top and I need to get the inside dry and keep it like that but funds are limited at the minute.

Rhinoman, yeah once it's warm it will sit at 800rpm nicely, it's my first suzuki so it's all new to me :-)
I will get some pictures up once I work out how too.
As for the soft top I think it's more old then anything, the Velcro is knackered but at least the zips work!! :-)
