Post by fossil » Sun Jan 18, 2015 5:41 pm

hi
i am currently building an offroader using my 1.6 vitara, has anyone ever changed the front diff and running gear to a live axle, if so what did the axle come out of?

thanks

Usually an SJ samurai axle is used with wheel spacers if purely replacing the front.

You can transfer the guts of a Vitara 3rd member/diff carrier into an SJ diff carrier/3rd member, I believe. I know you can swap the ring and pinion (I think vit diffs are weaker, 2 pin models, most SJ ones are stronger 4 pin ones).

That would give you standard ratios with a solid axle.

As far as I'm aware the 3rd member is an American term for the differential carrier.

He means that the vitara front diff carrier fits in an Sj axle, however to make it stronger you can take the ring and pinion from the vitara front diff and with a few slight mods you can fit them to the stronger samurai diff.

Yup, sorry for the confusion.

That's exactly what I meant.
