Hi,
No, didn't need to change the master cylinder at all in the end because it was just that the system wasn't being bled properly with the wrong wheel cylinders in there. No idea about master cylinder compatibility, maybe someone else can answer that...

Re: Spongy brake issue
Hi Darrell, Indeed that picture is spot on, exactly how ours looks. So the problem would've occurred when at some point before we owned it, the wheel cylinders were mistakenly replaced with Japanese style ones..Then the first mechanic we went to just matched the part number and got the same Japanese...

Re: Radiator fan shroud - vital or not?
Awesome, we were hoping it would be more of a safety thing rather than an essential part to the cooling functionality Thanks!

Radiator fan shroud - vital or not?
Just came in after spending all day tinkering with the sj, it ws getting a bit warm so about time to try cleaning out the radiator. In the end we managed to get it off somehow despite a lot of bolts being rusted in place, so here's the question: Do we really need the plastic shroud that surrounds th...

Re: Dead Alternator, or.. ?
Thanks Darrell, yeah 14v is what we thought. Will try wd40 before the next time we take it off road, and cleaning it out better if we end up in muddy water... In the end we got a reasonable deal from the local mechanic for a new alternator, apparently after he tested it, he figured out that the rela...

Re: Spongy brake issue
Thanks for the advice! We had a look at it and couldn't quite figure out if flipping it around would work because it didn't seem as though the handbrake cable would reach if it was flipped. In the end went to Rhino Ray who poked around in it as well and it turned out that there are two layouts of wh...

Dead Alternator, or.. ?
Hi again, I just posted in the wheels, tyres & brakes forum regarding our spongy brakes. As luck would have it, that's not the only problem we're experiencing... We're having an intermittent issue with the charging system. A while back we noticed that the battery got really weak and just gave up...

Spongy brake issue
Hi guys, Been a while since we've logged on and also been quite a while since we had the chance to get the sj dirty. Finally now we're trying to get a bunch of issues sorted, would love some inputs regarding what you all think... Brakes - ever since we went playing in some mud last year, the brakes ...

Re: Whining noise under load
Thanks so much for the advice! We'll check the state of the oil as suggested asap.
Meanwhile I just wanted to add: when pressing the clutch or letting off the accelerator the noise stops. Also, with the transfer box in neutral going through all the gears, there is no noise.
